Hello contrarians

Lots of people tell me the same thing lately.

They want a side hustle or that their kids are struggling to find jobs. I keep on hearing there are no opportunities.

They want a little extra income. Something on the side or even fulltime. Something that gives them a bit more control. But the sentence almost always ends the same way:

“I just don’t have the money to start something.”

The truth is, the problem is rarely lack of opportunity.

It’s usually lack of seeing the opportunity. This is especially true in the west.

Most people assume you need thousands of dollars to start a business. A big website. Inventory. Employees. Equipment.

You don’t!!

Some of the smartest little businesses start with almost nothing. Heck, when I first started business fulltime 15 years ago, I started with $600 dollars. The best money I ever spent.

Look, sometimes just a stack of simple business cards and the willingness to notice problems people are willing to pay to solve, is all it takes.

Last year a university student knocked on my door asking if he could clean my windows. He had a long extension brush, a little soap, and used my garden hose for water.

Two hours later my windows were spotless-and he walked away with $450 of my hard-earned Benjamins.

We chatted for a minute after he finished. He told me he only works about two months a year doing this, and it covers his tuition and living expenses. Let that sink in. Two months.

His equipment probably cost no more than $200 for the brush and a few dollars for soap. And when he got to my house, he had already finished three homes on my street.

Seeing that young man get after it made me proud. Sometimes the difference between getting ahead and staying stuck isn’t talent or money-it’s simply the willingness to knock on a door and ask.

Below are 10 clever side hustles you can start for under $100, listed roughly from most profitable to least profitable potential.

1. Garage Epoxy Lead Generator

Drive through neighborhoods and look for homes with garage keypad openers. Leave a simple business card that says:

“Garage Floor Epoxy – Free Quote.”

Partner with a local epoxy contractor who will pay for leads. Epoxy garage floors often cost $3,000–$6,000, so contractors happily pay $500–$1,000 per referral. Get on a scooter and you can drop 100 cards easy in 1 hour.

Just five jobs a month could mean $4,000–$5,000+ in commissions.

Startup cost: $40–$60 for printed cards. Heck, print them off yourself at home and cut them out.

If your teenage kids are looking for work, get them to start this asap, especially with spring and summer around the corner. Oohhh buddy! Thank me later!

2. Airbnb Co-Host Finder

Thousands of Airbnb owners don’t want to deal with guest messages, coordinating cleaners, or managing bookings.

Offer to manage those tasks and coordinate cleaners.

Most hosts will pay 10–20% of booking revenue.

Even managing just three properties can easily produce $900–$2,000+ per month.

Startup cost: $0–$50.

3. Facebook Marketplace Broker

Find items listed cheaply on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. Re-list them with better photos and descriptions at a higher price.

When someone wants to buy, connect them with the seller and keep the difference.

Many people make $50–$500 per item doing this without ever touching the inventory.

Startup cost: $0.

4. Junk Removal Lead Finder

On garbage days you’ll often see piles of furniture, renovation debris, or appliances outside homes.

Leave a small card that says:

“Need junk removed today? Text this number.”

Forward the job to a junk removal company.

Companies often pay $50–$150 per lead or $200–$500 when the job closes.

Startup cost: $50 for simple cards.

5. Garbage Bin Washing Service

This is one of those businesses that sounds simple but works surprisingly well.

Most people hate cleaning their garbage bins. They smell, they’re messy, and they attract flies.

Offer “Garbage Bin Cleaning – $20.”

If you clean 15–20 bins on the same street, that can be $300–$400 in just a few hours.

Startup cost: $50–$100.

6. Parking Spot Broker

Parking is incredibly valuable in busy cities.

Many homeowners have empty driveways they rarely use. Offer to help rent those spaces.

Even one driveway can rent for $50–$200 per month, and managing several spots can quickly become steady monthly income.

Startup cost: $0.

7. Storage Unit Referral Service

People moving almost always need storage.

Contact local storage facilities and ask if they offer referral commissions.

Then advertise to people moving or renovating.

Facilities often pay $25–$150 per new customer.

Startup cost: $50 for flyers or cards.

8. Moving Box Bundles

People moving constantly need boxes.

Ask grocery stores or retailers for their leftover cardboard boxes. They usually give them away for free.

Bundle them into “Moving Kits” and list them on Facebook Marketplace.

People happily pay $30–$60 per bundle.

Startup cost: $0–$20.

9. Digital Obituary Writing Service

When families lose someone, writing an obituary can be stressful and emotional.

Offer a service to write a thoughtful obituary and format it for funeral homes or newspapers.

You can charge $100–$300 per obituary.

Startup cost: $0.

10. Lost Pet Recovery Service

When a pet goes missing, owners are desperate for help quickly.

Offer to create flyers, distribute them in neighborhoods, and post in local community groups.

Charge $100–$300 for rapid outreach.

Startup cost: $50 for printed flyers.

If I was a teenager again, I would be the wealthiest teenager in my neighborhood. I see so many opportunities it overwhelms me. If you have teenage kids and young adults in your home, get them to think outside the box. Let them know that literally everything around you someone paid to make or put together. Just pick one with less friction and either do the work or outsource.
